FOOTBALL: The Matildas have suffered a 4-0 defeat against world number one USA at the Alamodome in San Antonio this morning (AEDT).

FOOTBALL: The Matildas have suffered a 4-0 defeat against world number one USA at the Alamodome in San Antonio this morning (AEDT).

Two goals in each half undid the Aussies with Lauren Holiday (6'), Carli Lloyd (14'), Abby Wambach (56') and Christen Press (90+2’) all netting for the two-time world champions.

Australia forward Lisa De Vanna was a constant menace for the USA backline, forcing goalkeeper Hope Solo into several saves.

Australia was put on the back foot by two exceptional early strikes but recovered their composure to turn the match into a tough contest.

Reigning FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year Abby Wambach added a third after the break, while an injury-time goal rounded out the scoring.

“The good thing is that we created four of five very good opportunities in the first half,” said Australia coach Hesterine De Reus.

“Our forward line was very dangerous in the first half and we created opportunities through our build-up which is a good thing.

“The defending part of our game was not good enough. Conceding four goals is way too much.

“In the second half we became tired and dropped a bit more defensively which created a big space in the midfield so we created some problems for ourselves.
“It is not surprising as we are out of season so there have not been so many opportunities to play tough football for most of the girls.”

Australia’s match-up with two-time world champions USA in San Antonio will be shown on ABC TV on Monday 21 October at 11am (ABC 1). The one-hour programme will be replayed at 11:35pm on Monday.

The Matildas will face China in two internationals in Australia on November 24 (WIN Stadium, Wollongong) and November 27 (Pirtek Stadium, Parramatta). Tickets for the two matches can be purchased at http://www.footballaustralia.com.au/tickets
