Abby's Story

Abby Bishop became a scholarship holder at the Australian Institute of Sport in 2005 and won Rookie of the Year in her debut WNBL season. Bishop produced even more impressive numbers the following season for the Canberra Capitals who went on to win the grand final. She went on to win three straight titles with the Capitals. Bishop won silver at the 2007 U/21 World Championships in Russia and debuted for the senior team that same year. She went on to sign for the Seattle Storm where she won the WNBA title in her first year abroad.

Heading to her first Olympic Games in London, a costly 74-70 overtime loss to France in the preliminary rounds saw the Australians finish second in their pool. After defeating China in the quarter-final (75-60), they faced the USA earlier than expected for a berth in the gold medal match.

As they had done in three previous Olympic campaigns, the world number one USA beat the Australians (86-73) and went on to take gold over the French. Australia faced Russia for the bronze, winning 83-74 to continue the Opals’ strong Olympic record.
