Addy's Story
Born in Geelong in 1960, Addy Bucek grew up in sailing and was competing from childhood, first alongside her brother Frank in the cadet dinghy class. Their partnership brought early international success when they won the Cadet World Championship in Portugal in 1974. Bucek later became a leading crew in the women’s 470 class, racing out of Victoria and building the experience that would carry her to two Olympic Games. She was 31 at Barcelona 1992 and 35 at Atlanta 1996.
Bucek’s Olympic story was built through her long-standing partnership with skipper Jeni Lidgett in the women’s two-person 470 dinghy. At Barcelona, the Australian pair finished ninth overall, and four years later they improved to eighth in Atlanta. Those results placed Bucek among Australia’s dual Olympians in sailing and reflected a career spent competing at the top level of an exacting class where consistency across a regatta mattered as much as outright speed. Her path from cadet world champion to Olympian also underlined the strength of Victoria’s sailing tradition, with Black Rock Yacht Club listed among her affiliations.
