Alex's Story

Alexander “Alex” Martonffy was an Australian fencer who represented Australia at the 1956 Melbourne and 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games. Born on 7 May 1919, he was a longstanding member of Melbourne's VRI Fencing Club and one of Australia's leading sabre fencers.

Martonffy competed in both individual and team sabre events during his Olympic career. Between his two Olympic appearances, he achieved one of the highlights of Australian fencing by helping secure a silver medal in the men's team sabre at the 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Cardiff.

His lengthy international career made him one of Australia's most prominent fencers of the 1950s and 1960s.
