Alex Beck made his international debut at the World Youth (U18) Championships in 2009 where he progressed to the 400m semi and helped the medley relay to seventh in the final. He next appeared in the green and gold aged 21 at the 2013 World Championships. He ran on the national team for the next few years including clocking an impressive PB of 45.91 at the 2015 World University Games.
He missed national selection from 2016 to 2018, but returned in 2019 at the World Relays and World Championships. In Doha, the national team progressed to the final, placing seventh.
In good form in early 2020, including a 400m PB of 45.82, the season was shut down due to COVID. Back on the track in late 2020, he took down his 100m and 200m PBs. In early 2021 the momentum continued with PBs over 200m, 300m and 400m, with times of 20.84, 32.95 and 45.72 respectively. He also claimed the 200m/400m national championship double, the first athlete in 32 years to achieve this. They were his first titles since his inaugural win in 2013.
In June at the Oceania Invitational, he ran on the national relay team that broke the Australian mixed 4x400m record.
He ran magnificently in Tokyo, placing 6th in his 400m heat in a personal best time of 45.54 seconds. He missed progressing to the semi-final by the barest of margins - 0.03 seconds and one place.
Off the track, Alex is a qualified physio and has completed a Doctor of Physiotherapy and Bachelor of Exercise Science.
