Alexander’s Story
Alexander James “Alex” Watson, born in Mosman, New South Wales, was selected for the Australian Olympic Team for Moscow 1980. He did not compete after modern pentathlon’s national federation withdrew its athletes amid the Olympic boycott. Watson made his Olympic debut at Los Angeles 1984, aged 26, finishing 15th individually with 5,108 points and helping Australia place 14th in the team competition.
Watson returned for Seoul 1988 but was disqualified after a test exceeded the caffeine threshold then permitted under Olympic rules. He disputed the finding and resumed Olympic competition at Barcelona 1992, where he finished 63rd individually and Australia placed 16th in the team event.
Across three contested Olympic Games, Watson represented Australia in one of the Olympic program’s most varied disciplines, which combined riding, fencing, shooting, swimming and running.
