Amanda's Story
Born in Altona, Victoria, in 1971, Amanda Hardy became one of Australia’s leading doubles specialists in badminton through the 1990s. Affiliated with Western Suburbs, Hardy built her international career in women’s doubles and mixed doubles and was 24 when she made her Olympic debut at Atlanta 1996, before returning at 28 for the Sydney 2000 Games. Her broader career also included Commonwealth Games team bronze medals in 1994 and 1998, placing her among the prominent Australian badminton players of her era.
Hardy competed in two Olympic Games and in four doubles events overall. In Atlanta, she finished equal 17th in the women’s doubles with Rhonda Cator and equal 17th in the mixed doubles with Paul Stevenson. Four years later in Sydney, she again reached equal 17th in both doubles draws, partnering Rhonda Cator in the women’s doubles and David Bamford in the mixed doubles. While she did not progress deep into the Olympic tournament, Hardy’s longevity and repeated selection reflected her standing in Australian badminton at a time when Olympic qualification in the sport was highly competitive
