Andrew's Story
Born in Wee Waa, New South Wales, in 1971, Andrew Currey developed into one of Australia’s leading javelin throwers of the 1990s. Competing for Illawarra Blue Stars, Currey represented Australia at two Olympic Games and spent much of that decade at the front of the national event. He was 25 at Atlanta 1996 and 29 at Sydney 2000. World Athletics credits him with six national titles and a personal best of 86.67 metres, recorded in 2001.
Currey’s Olympic appearances came in the men’s javelin. In Atlanta he threw 77.28 metres in qualifying to place 21st overall, and at Sydney he reached 78.12 metres in qualification to place 22nd. Although he did not advance to an Olympic final, Currey was a consistent figure in Australian athletics across more than a decade, also recording strong performances at Commonwealth Games and World Championships. His career sits alongside that of fellow Olympian Louise McPaul-Currey, his wife, in one of Australian athletics’ notable javelin partnerships.
