Andrew's Story
1978 –
Andrew Smith won a bronze medal for Australia in men’s hockey in 2008. Smith, from New South Wales, set an Olympic first with his performance in Beijing. Under a new rule introduced before the Games, Smith was named as one of two reserves to the 16-man Kookaburras team. When Grant Schubert was ruled out of the tournament with injury after Australia’s last preliminary round game, Smith was eligible to replace him. It was the first time Australia had used the new rule. He proved his class by contributing well, firstly in Australia’s semi-final loss to Spain then its 6-2 bronze medal final win over the Netherlands.
