Andrew's Story
Andrew Stewart represented Melville Water Polo Club in Western Australia and earned selection for Australia’s men’s water polo team at the Moscow 1980 Olympic Games. Born in 1954, Stewart was 25 when he made his Olympic debut.
Australia opened its campaign with a 9-5 victory over Bulgaria before losses to Cuba and eventual gold medalist the Soviet Union placed the team in the classification round. The Australians responded strongly, remaining unbeaten through their final five matches. They defeated Bulgaria 8-5, Greece 4-2, Sweden 9-4 and Italy 5-4, while drawing 4-4 with Romania.
That run secured seventh place for Stewart and his teammates, improving Australia’s position from 11th at Montreal four years earlier. Their victory over Italy provided a memorable conclusion to the campaign.
