Anna's Story

At her debut Olympic Games in Sochi, 27-year-old Anna Segal created her share of history. Segal was Australia’s sole female representative in Ski Slopestyle which was on the Olympic program for the first time in 2014. The Victorian then went on to finish fourth and record Australia’s first fourth place finish in Winter Olympic history.

Segal, who battled a head cold and carried knee injuries into the Games, qualified seventh for the final. She was in the bronze medal position after her first run and stayed there until the very last skier to come down – Canadian Kim Lamarre – bumped her off the podium, scoring 85 points to Segal’s 77. “The last year has been the rollercoaster ride of my life,” a relieved Segal said at the end of the competition.

Segal had shot to prominence as a 23-year-old when she won the 2009 Winter X Games crown. Two years later she won the 2011 World Slopestyle title. Coming from a Moguls background, Segal thought she had given up on her Olympic dreams when she switched to Ski Slopestyle, until the IOC added Slopestyle to the Olympic program for 2014.
