Aurelio's Story

Born in Adelaide in 1967, Aurelio Vidmar was already an established international footballer when he represented Australia at the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games. Vidmar, who was playing with Swiss club Sion at the time, was 29 in Atlanta and brought senior experience to an Australian squad taking on the men’s Olympic tournament. His selection reflected the standing he had earned in Australian football through a career that spanned the domestic and international game.

Vidmar was part of the Australian side that finished 13th in Atlanta, recording a win over Saudi Arabia but falling short against France and Spain in group play. Although the Olympic campaign was brief, his presence gave the team composure and class in attack, and his broader contribution to Australian football ensured he remained one of the best-known figures of his generation. He also came from one of the country’s notable football families, with brother Tony Vidmar likewise going on to represent Australia with distinction.
