Barbara's Story
Barbara Elizabeth Sargeant (née Evans) was an Australian breaststroke swimmer who represented Australia at the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games. Born on 28 January 1940, she competed in the women's 200-metre breaststroke while still a teenager and was among Australia's leading young swimmers of the era.
At the Melbourne Olympics, Sargeant competed in the 200-metre breaststroke, earning selection after becoming Australian champion in the event.
She continued her international career after the Olympics and won a silver medal in the 4 × 110-yard medley relay at the 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Cardiff. Her achievements established her as one of Australia's notable breaststroke swimmers of the 1950s.
