Barry's Story

Barry Kenneth Stuart was one of Australia's most accomplished sprint canoeists, representing Australia at four consecutive Olympic Games: Melbourne 1956, Rome 1960, Tokyo 1964 and Mexico City 1968. Born in Sydney on 4 April 1934, he enjoyed a distinguished international career spanning more than a decade.

Stuart made his Olympic debut at Melbourne 1956, finishing ninth in the men's K1 1000-metre event. He later competed in K2 and K4 events, achieving another ninth-place finish in the K4 1000 metres at Tokyo 1964.

Beyond canoeing, Stuart was also an outstanding surfer and surf lifesaver. Together with paddling partner Dennis Green, he won 18 Australian championship kayak pairs titles between 1955 and 1974. His contributions to water sports earned him recognition on the Australian Surfing Walk of Fame.
