Benny's Story
Benny Pike was born in Noosa and grew up on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. He began boxing in 1971, having his first bout at the Nambour Civic Centre shortly after turning 17. Pike went on to win state and national titles before representing Australia at the Commonwealth and Olympic Games. Pike was 26 when he contested the light-heavyweight division at Moscow 1980. He opened his campaign with a second-round stoppage of Congo’s Anaclet Wamba, earning a place in the quarter-finals. Pike finished equal fifth, making him Australia’s best-performed boxer at those Games. Pike also reached the light-heavyweight quarter-finals at the Edmonton 1978 and Brisbane 1982 Commonwealth Games. After boxing, he remained closely involved in Sunshine Coast sport through commentary, promotion and advocacy.
