Beverley's Story
Beverley Ann Spargo, later known as Beverley Bainbridge, was an Australian swimmer who represented Australia at the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games. Born on 28 January 1940, she specialised in the butterfly stroke and emerged as one of Australia's leading young swimmers during the 1950s.
At the Melbourne Olympics, Spargo competed in the inaugural women's 100-metre butterfly event and finished fifth in the final, an outstanding achievement for a 16-year-old swimmer.
She went on to enjoy further success at the 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Cardiff, winning gold in the 110-yard butterfly and silver in the 4×110-yard medley relay. Spargo also set multiple Australian butterfly records during her career.
