Brian's Story

Brian Patrick McCowage was one of Australia's most accomplished fencers, representing Australia at the 1956 Melbourne, 1960 Rome and 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games. Born in Sydney on 20 May 1935, he specialised in foil fencing and was a dominant figure in Australian fencing for more than a decade.

At the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, McCowage competed in both the individual and team foil events, advancing to the semifinals in the individual competition.

Beyond the Olympics, he won four Commonwealth Games silver medals in team events between 1958 and 1966 and claimed six Australian foil championships. His long international career established him as one of the leading Australian fencers of his era.
