Bruce's Story
Bruce McLeod Sharp was an Australian artistic gymnast who represented Australia at the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games. Born in Bexley, New South Wales, on 24 March 1931, Sharp was a member of Australia's inaugural Olympic men's gymnastics team.
At Melbourne 1956, Sharp competed in eight events, including the individual all-around, floor exercise, pommel horse, rings, vault, parallel bars and horizontal bar. He helped Australia finish seventh in the team competition, with his best individual result coming in the vault.
A dedicated athlete, Sharp famously built much of his own training equipment in his backyard. Beyond gymnastics, he enjoyed a successful career as a photographer and artist, became a life member of Gymnastics NSW, and carried the Olympic torch before the Sydney 2000 Games.
