Cory's Story
Born in Melbourne in 1972, Cory O'Brien built his international career in freestyle wrestling and was affiliated with Victoria University. O'Brien was 24 when he made his Olympic debut at Atlanta 1996 and 28 when he returned for the Sydney 2000 Games, competing in one of Australia’s most demanding individual sports.
O'Brien finished equal 19th in the bantamweight freestyle division in Atlanta and 17th in the featherweight freestyle division in Sydney. His wider career included a bronze medal at the 1994 Commonwealth Games and a series of Oceania titles, results that underlined his standing in Australian wrestling across more than a decade. Representing Australia at two Olympic Games gave O'Brien a notable place in the sport’s national history.
