Cris's Story
Born in Melbourne in 1963, Christopher “Cris” Brown became one of Australia’s most enduring Olympic wrestlers, representing the country at five Games from 1980 to 1996. Brown was only 17 when he first competed at Moscow 1980, and he returned for Los Angeles 1984, Seoul 1988, Barcelona 1992 and Atlanta 1996, a span that reflected remarkable longevity in a bruising sport. He was affiliated with Victoria University.
Brown’s finest Olympic result came at Los Angeles, where he finished fourth in the featherweight freestyle division, missing a medal by one bout. He later placed equal ninth in Seoul, equal 17th in Barcelona and equal 19th in Atlanta, while his Moscow campaign included bantamweight competition after a non-start in flyweight. Beyond the Olympics, Brown won silver at the 1982 Commonwealth Games and multiple Oceania titles, confirming his standing as one of Australia’s most accomplished freestyle wrestlers.
