Daniela's Story

1965 -

Daniela Costian became the first Australian discus thrower to win an Olympic medal when she won bronze in Barcelona. Costian was also the only Australian woman to win a track and field medal in 1992. Born in Romania, Costian defected to Australia in the late 1980s and achieved great success for her new country, the highlight being her Olympic medal. Costian would also compete in discus for Australia in 1996 and 2000. As well, she won a silver medal at the 1993 world championships and a Commonwealth Games gold medal in 1994.
