David's Story
Born in Penola, South Australia, in 1967, David Belcher rowed out of Torrens Rowing Club in Adelaide and represented Australia at the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games. Belcher was 29 when he took his place in the men’s lightweight four, one of rowing’s most exacting crew events, where rhythm and precision were as important as endurance.
Belcher and the Australian lightweight four progressed through the repechage and semi-final to reach the Olympic A final, where they finished sixth. A place in an Olympic final remains a significant result in international rowing, and Belcher’s campaign in Atlanta gave him a respected place in Australia’s Olympic history in the sport.
