David's Story
David Illingworth Schumacher was an Australian freestyle wrestler who represented Australia at the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games. Born in Adelaide on 30 November 1931, Schumacher became one of South Australia's leading wrestlers after taking up the sport at age 18.
Following several Australian championship victories, he earned selection for the Melbourne Olympics in the lightweight freestyle division. Although he was eliminated after his opening bouts, Olympic selection marked the pinnacle of his competitive career.
After retiring from active competition, Schumacher devoted decades to the sport as a coach and administrator. He remained deeply involved in Australian wrestling throughout his life and was also a torchbearer during the Sydney 2000 Olympic Torch Relay.
