Denise's Story
Denise Antonia Wild (née O’Brien) was one of the pioneers of women’s fencing in Australia and represented Australia at the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games. Born in Brisbane on 25 July 1937, she was among the first Australian women to compete internationally in the sport.
At Melbourne 1956, Wild competed in the women’s individual foil event. She later represented Australia again at the 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Cardiff.
A memorable part of her Olympic story was meeting Canadian basketball player Ed Wild during the Melbourne Games. The pair married in 1958 and later settled in Canada, where they raised a family.
