Dion's Story
Born in Melbourne in 1975, Dion Russell built his international career in race walking and was affiliated with Athletics Essendon. Russell was 21 when he competed at the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games and 25 when he returned for the Sydney 2000 Games, representing Australia in one of athletics’ most exacting endurance events.
Russell contested the 20-kilometre walk in Atlanta, finishing 47th, then doubled up in Sydney in both the 20-kilometre and 50-kilometre walks, placing 25th and 27th. His wider career included personal bests of 1:20:49 for 20 kilometres and 3:47:34 for 50 kilometres, marks that reflected his standing among Australia’s leading walkers of the period. Competing at two Olympic Games gave Russell a respected place in Australian race walking history.
