Donald's Story

Donald Michael “Don” Keane was an Australian race walker who represented Australia at the 1952 Helsinki and 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games. Born in Perth on 12 November 1930, Keane established himself as one of Australia's leading walkers during the 1950s.

At the Melbourne Olympics, he competed in the 20-kilometre race walk and achieved an outstanding sixth-place finish, one of the best Australian athletics performances in the event at that time.

Keane was a seven-time Australian champion in the two-mile walk between 1950 and 1958 and also enjoyed success in cross-country running. His dominance helped establish race walking as an important discipline within Australian athletics.
