Edith's Story

Edith Cochrane was an Australian sprint canoeist who represented Australia at the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games. Born on 8 September 1935, she was one of Australia's pioneering female canoe athletes.

Competing in the women's K-1 500 metres at Melbourne 1956, Cochrane finished fifth, an outstanding result in a sport then dominated by European nations. 

Notably, she was Australia's only competitor in the women's kayak event at the Games and helped establish a path for future generations of Australian female paddlers.
