Elspeth’s Story
Elspeth Denning OAM, who competed under the name Elspeth Clement, was among the finest defenders to represent Australia. Born in Kenya and based in Western Australia, the accomplished full-back was selected for three Australian Olympic teams. She was chosen for Moscow 1980 but did not compete after Australian hockey withdrew from the Games amid the Olympic boycott. Denning made her Olympic debut at Los Angeles 1984, where Australia narrowly missed a medal and finished fourth.
The highlight of Denning’s career came at Seoul 1988, where she was vice-captain of the team that won Australia’s first Olympic hockey gold medal. Her strength and consistency in defense were vital throughout the tournament. Australia defeated the Netherlands 3-2 in the semifinal before Denning and her fellow defenders shut out South Korea in a 2-0 victory in the gold medal match. During the Olympic tournament, she became the first woman to represent Australia in 100 international matches.
Denning received the Medal of the Order of Australia in 1989 and was inducted into the Hockey Australia Hall of Fame in 2021.
