About Esther

Esther Qin, who was born in China, received her early training in Beijing before her family moved to Australia in 2009 when her father got a job as a chef.

At 12-years-old, Qin entered her first diving competition where she claimed first place in the 1m springboard and 10m platform, and second place in the 3m springboard. Once she moved to Australia, Qin quickly moved up the rankings and was selected for the NSW Institute of Sport (NSWIS) diving program, training under head coach Chava Sobrino.

The 29-year-old made her international debut competing for Australia in 2013. At the 2013 Summer Universiade, held in Kazan Russia, she won a silver medal  in the Women’s 3m Synchronised Springboard event, alongside Samantha Mills.

In 2014, Qin qualified for her first Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The talented diver claimed gold in the 3m Springboard, bronze in the 1m Springboard and 4th in the Women’s 3m Synchronised Springboard, alongside Anna Gelai.

Her success continued in 2015, when she won gold at the FINA/NVC Diving World Series in Canada. She went on to finish fourth in the three metre springboard individual and third in the three metre springboard synchro at the 2015 World Championships in Russia, alongside Samantha Mills.

After a solid performance at the 2016 Australian Championships, Qin claimed a spot on the 2016 Australian Olympic Team. At her debut Olympics she made the finals on the 3m springboard, placing sixth overall after finishing fifth in the preliminary and 10th in the semi-final.

The diver competed at her second Commonwealth Games in 2018, claiming the gold medal in the 3m springboard synchro alongside Georgia Sheehan. She also won bronze in the women's 1m springboard.

Esther had an impressive performance at the 2021 Australia Open Championships, which also doubled as the 2021 Tokyo Olympics qualifying event.

Five years after Rio, Qin returned to the Olympic arena and made the Final of the Women’s 3m Springboard at the Tokyo Games. She was second on the leaderboard after the first round of the Semi-Final and she solidified her place in the Final with a quality reverse two and a half somersault dive in the fourth round. Ultimately, she placed 12th in the Final.
