Francis's Story

5/3/1945 – 7/2/2011

Frank Roberts, originally from northern New South Wales, boxed in the welterweight division at Tokyo 1964.  He lost on points in the first round of the tournament to one of the eventual bronze medallists, the vastly more experienced Pertti Purhonen of Finland.  Whilst in Tokyo, he was one of the Australian team members invited to dine with Emperor Hirohito.

Roberts participated in the 2000 Olympic Torch Relay in Armidale, NSW.

With Michael Ah Matt and Adrian Blair, he was a member of the first group of indigenous athletes in the Australian Olympic team.  He is a member of the Aboriginal and Islander Sports Hall of Fame.
