Gary's Story

Gary Sutton emerged as one of Australia’s most versatile cyclists, competing with distinction on both the track and road. He first represented Australia at the 1974 British Commonwealth Games in Christchurch, winning silver in the 4000m team pursuit and bronze in the individual pursuit. Four years later, Sutton claimed team pursuit gold and bronze in the 10-mile scratch race at the Commonwealth Games in Edmonton.

Sutton made his Olympic debut as a 21-year-old at Montreal 1976. Riding in the 4000m individual pursuit, he recorded 4 minutes, 50.57 seconds in the opening round and finished sixth overall. He returned at Moscow 1980, where he joined Colin Fitzgerald, Kevin Nichols and Kelvin Poole in the Australian 4000m team pursuit squad. Australia qualified eighth before meeting the Soviet Union in the quarter-finals, finishing sixth overall.

Later in 1980, Sutton achieved the greatest international victory of his career when he won the amateur points race at the track world championships in Besançon, France. After turning professional, he earned silver in the professional points race at the 1982 world championships and bronze the following year. Sutton also demonstrated his ability on the road, winning the 1984 Herald Sun Tour. Following his racing career, he became a highly regarded coach and contributed to Australia’s high-performance cycling program for more than two decades. His career across Olympic competition, world championships, road racing and coaching established an enduring connection with Australian cycling.
