Gordon's Story
Born in Wollongong, Gordon McLeod developed into a skilful point guard and represented Australia at the 1978 world championships. He helped the Boomers finish seventh, which was then the team’s best result at the tournament. McLeod made his Olympic debut aged 23 at Moscow 1980.
Australia recorded five victories, including wins over Italy, Sweden and Czechoslovakia, before finishing eighth in the 12-team tournament. McLeod played 12 seasons in Australia’s national league, principally with the Illawarra Hawks. After retiring as a player, he moved into coaching and became the inaugural head coach of the West Sydney Razorbacks in 1998.
