Graham's Story
1932 -
Graham Gipson, from Western Australia, teamed with Leon Gregory, David Lean and Kevan Gosper to win the silver medal behind the powerful American combination in the 4 x 400 metres relay at Melbourne 1956. This was the first Olympic medal by an Australian men’s athletics relay team. The next was the same medal in the same event by the ‘Silver Bullets’ (John Steffenson, Mark Ormrod, Pat Dwyer, Chris Hill) at Athens 2004. Gipson, who had been the national champion in the 440 yards in 1953, ran in the preliminaries of the 200 metres and 400 metres at Melbourne, making the quarter finals in the longer event.
