Grant's Story

Born in 1967, Grant Leury represented Australia in canoe sprint at the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games. Leury was 28 when he competed in the men’s kayak double 1000 metres, one of the sport’s most demanding events, where speed, rhythm and endurance all had to be perfectly matched between two paddlers.

Leury and the Australian crew reached the Olympic final and finished seventh, a result that placed them among the leading crews in the world at those Games. A top-eight Olympic finish remains a notable achievement in canoe sprint, and Leury’s performance in Atlanta gave him a respected place in Australia’s Olympic paddling history.
