Gregory's Story

Born in 1976, Gregory Fitzgerald represented Australia in freestyle wrestling at the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games. Fitzgerald was 19 when he reached the Olympic stage in the men’s 52-kilogram division, a weight class in which speed, balance and precision were everything.

At Atlanta, Fitzgerald finished 18th after two pool-bout defeats in a fiercely competitive field. While his Olympic campaign was limited to one Games, selection for Australia at that level marked him as one of the nation’s leading freestyle wrestlers of the period. His appearance in Atlanta secured his place in Australia’s Olympic wrestling history.
