Gregory's Story
After the disappointment of missing out on the Vancouver Games, the bubbly duo of Danielle O’Brien and Greg Merriman finally made their Olympic debut at Sochi in 2014.
Just before their 2010 Olympic qualification tournament, Merriman was hospitalised with Pericarditis - inflammation of the sac around the heart. His illness forced the duo to pull out from the tournament and ultimately miss the Games. The pair focused on another four year campaign, moved to Detroit, USA and set their sights on Sochi.
O'Brien and Merriman came to the Games in Russia with the goal of reaching the free skate, and did so with flying colours, finishing their short program with a season’s best score of 52.68. The score put them in 20th position and secured them a spot in the final. They then went on to give a strong and entertaining free program, dancing a circus-inspired routine full of playfulness and enthusiasm .their combined score of 128.53 remained the pair in 20th.
Skating together since 1998, O’Brien and Merriman retired from international competition after Sochi, the pair also made history by winning seven consecutive National Titles.
