Ian's Story
Tasmanian-born Ian Davies developed his basketball in the United States, representing Graceland College in Iowa before playing professionally with the Maine Lumberjacks. Renowned as an outstanding shooter and prolific scorer, he made his Olympic debut aged 24 at Moscow 1980. Davies led all players at the Moscow tournament with 209 points, averaging 29.9 points across seven games as Australia finished eighth.
He returned at Los Angeles 1984, helping the Boomers reach the quarter-finals and secure seventh place, then Australia’s best Olympic men’s basketball result. Between his Olympic appearances, Davies helped Launceston win the 1981 Australian national league championship and represented Australia at the 1982 and 1986 world championships. He played more than 80 internationals and 252 national league games before contributing to basketball through coaching and administration.
