Islay's Story

Islay Lee grew up in Lismore, New South Wales, and began rowing with the Lismore Rowing Club. Supported by training advice from respected German coach Karl Adam, Lee developed into a versatile rower and won national titles in both individual and crew boats.

Lee made his Olympic debut aged 26 at Montreal 1976, setting the pace from the stroke seat as Australia won its heat and finished fifth in the men’s eight final. He returned in the same event at Moscow 1980, where Australia again placed fifth.

Across his career, Lee won 15 Australian championships and helped New South Wales claim three consecutive King’s Cup victories. He later served rowing as a school coach, national selector and president of Rowing Australia, while also pursuing a distinguished career in education.
