Jack's Story

Jack Standen competed in the cycling sprint, and was entered in the road race but didn’t start, at Amsterdam 1928. In the sprint he was defeated by the eventual silver medallist, in the quarter-finals. Immediately after the Olympics, he finished third in the sprint at the world championships in Budapest, Hungary.

Soon after returning to Australia, in early 1929, he opted to become a professional in order to achieve his maximum potential. He was immediately suspended from all forms of racing for two years because he had broken his bond of remaining an amateur following Amsterdam for that time (two years). His successful professional career commenced in 1931.
