James's Story

James Lowe began rowing at Geelong Grammar School, helping its first eight win the Victorian schools’ Head of the River in 1974. He later represented Melbourne University and Banks rowing clubs, and became a regular member of Victoria’s King’s Cup crews.

Lowe represented Australia at the 1978 and 1979 world championships before making his Olympic debut aged 24 at Moscow 1980. Rowing in the men’s eight, he helped Australia win its repechage and finish fifth in the Olympic final.

At Los Angeles 1984, Lowe contested the men’s four and finished eighth, completing his second Olympic campaign. He later served as a Victorian selector and rowing administrator, and helped select the original crew that became known as the Oarsome Foursome.
