James's Story

Born in 1973, James Stewart built a distinguished Olympic rowing career across three Games. Stewart was 22 when he competed at Atlanta 1996, 26 at Sydney 2000 and 30 at Athens 2004, showing the consistency and endurance needed to remain at the top level in different boat classes.

Stewart first raced in the men’s eight at Atlanta, where Australia finished sixth. Four years later, he won bronze in the men’s coxless four at Sydney, before adding another bronze medal in the men’s eight at Athens. His 2004 campaign also formed part of a notable family chapter in Australian rowing, with the Australian Olympic Committee recording that brother Stephen rowed in the same bronze-medal eight alongside James and Geoff Stewart.
