Jimmy's Story

1929 – 1990

Jimmy Caruthers cruised through his first two bouts in the bantamweight boxing at London 1948. Unfortunately, he picked up a cut above his eye during the second bout. That cut had not healed enough to allow him to fight in the quarter-finals. His scheduled opponent if he had fought was Tibor Csik of Hungary who went on to win the gold medal. A South African, Vic Toweel, was eliminated in the first round contests.

In 1952, now a professional, Jimmy Carruthers defeated Vic Toweel to annex the bantamweight world championship, thus becoming the first Australian to win an official world boxing title. After the 1956 Hungarian uprising, Tibor Csik moved to Australia, where he lived out his life.
