Joanna's Story

Born in 1972, Joanna Nixon represented Australia in the javelin throw at two Olympic Games, competing at Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000. Nixon was 23 at her Olympic debut and 27 when she returned on home soil in Sydney, building her career in one of athletics’ most technical field events, where rhythm, speed and timing must come together in a single throw.

Nixon finished 16th in Atlanta with a qualifying throw of 58.54 metres, then placed 17th in Sydney with 58.34 metres. To return for a second Olympic campaign in the same event reflected both her consistency and her standing among Australia’s leading javelin throwers of that era.
