Jocelyn's Story

1958 -

Joyce Lester is recognised as one of the greatest softball players to represent Australia. The fitting finale to her long international career came in Atlanta when she captained Australia to a bronze medal as softball made its Olympic debut. From Queensland, Lester started her career as an outfielder before becoming a catcher. The Aussie team got off to a shaky start in the Olympic tournament, losing its first game to China 6-0 in the round-robin preliminary phase. But it later enjoyed one of its most celebrated victories, a 2-1 win over the United States, the eventual gold medallists. Lester has stayed involved in the sport as a coach, administrator and media personality. Her honours include being inducted into the Australian Sports Hall of Fame and the International Softball Federation’s Hall of Fame.
