John's Story

John Cuneo, Tom Anderson and John Shaw won the gold medal in the Dragon class sailing at Munich 1972.  On the same day, David Forbes and Tom Anderson’s twin, John, won another gold medal in the Stars.  Twins winning gold medals on the same day in different events is a unique occurrence at the Olympic Games.

Cuneo was the Australian Yachtsman of the Year in 1967-68 and he went on to compete at Mexico City 1968, with Tom Anderson and John Ferguson, finishing fifth in the Dragons. He was selected to go to Moscow 1980 as the sailing coach, but the yachting contingent withdrew from the Australian team due to the proposed boycott.  Cuneo had a long and varied career in Australian and international sailing world, including America’s Cup campaigns.  In 1986, he was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame.
