About Joshua

Hicks first represented Australia at the 2009 Junior World Championships, where he earned silver in the Men’s Four. Soon after he began his American collegiate career with Harvard University, where he had been awarded a rowing scholarship.

After completing his American tertiary education, the Western Australian returned home and was invited to Lake Burley Griffin to form part of Rowing Australia’s Reinhold Batschi National Training Centre. In 2017 and 2018, Hicks was a regular fixture in the Men’s Four, where he won two consecutive World Championship gold medals, the first signalled the first time in 26 years that an Australian crew had been crowned World Champions in this boat class. Two trophy-laden seasons earned Hicks and his teammates World Rowing’s 2018 Male Crew of the Year Award.

Hicks shifted to the Men's Pairs in 2019 and he went on to make his Olympic debut in this boat class at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, held in 2021.

Joining Sam Hardy in the Men’s Pair, the duo were the favourites going into their Heat and their fast start and early lead saw them finish first. However, they were unable to secure a start in the race for medals after they finished fourth in the Semi-Final. Racing in the B-Final, the crew finished fourth, ultimately placing them 10th overall.
