Judy's Story

1928 –

In winning the bronze medal in the 100m backstroke at London 1948, Judy Joy Davies became the first Australian, male or female, to win an Olympic medal in that swimming discipline. She won many Australian titles in freestyle, backstroke and medley and at the Empire Games at Auckland 1950, she won gold medals in the 110 yards backstroke and was a member of the winning relay squads in the 4x110 yards freestyle and 3x110 yards medley relays. At Helsinki 1952, Davies made the semi-finals of the 400m freestyle. After retiring from swimming, she became a long-time sporting journalist with a number of newspapers in her native Melbourne.
