June's Story

1928 - 2004

June Maston was one of only five Australian female athletes at London 1948. In the 4 x 100 metres relay, she joined with Betty McKinnon, Joyce King and Shirley Strickland to finish a close second behind the Fanny Blankers-Koen-led Dutch team. It took a sparkling anchor leg by Blankers-Koen to claim the Olympic title. This was Australia’s first relay medal in Olympic athletics. Maston also competed in the long jump at London. After her Olympic experience Maston, as June Ferguson, developed into Australia’s greatest athletics coach with two of her charges, Betty Cuthbert (Melbourne 1956 and Tokyo 1964) and Maureen Caird (Mexico City 1968), winning five Olympic gold medals between them.
