Karen's Story

Karen Ramsay, who competed under her maiden name Karen Van de Graaf, developed into a versatile freestyle and butterfly swimmer. Born in 1962, she was 17 when she represented Australia at the Moscow 1980 Olympic Games.

Ramsay contested three individual events in Moscow, placing 11th in the 200 metres butterfly, 13th in the 100 metres butterfly and 16th in the 200 metres freestyle. Her wide-ranging program also included two Australian relay teams.

She reached Olympic finals in both relays, helping Australia finish fifth in the 4 x 100 metres freestyle relay and sixth in the 4 x 100 metres medley relay. Those performances made the relay events the strongest results of her five-event Olympic campaign.
