Karin's Story
Karin Tracey Van Wirdum is a former Australian freestyle swimmer who competed at three Olympic Games: Seoul 1988, Barcelona 1992 and Atlanta 1996. Born in Brisbane, Queensland, on 9 April 1971, she was one of Australia's leading sprint freestyle swimmers during the late 1980s and 1990s.
Van Wirdum competed in Olympic events including the 50-metre freestyle, 100-metre freestyle and relay competitions. Across her three Olympic appearances, she consistently ranked among Australia's top female swimmers and represented the nation with distinction on the international stage.
Her greatest successes came at the Commonwealth Games, where she won gold medals in the 100-metre freestyle, 4×100-metre freestyle relay and 4×100-metre medley relay at Auckland in 1990, and added further gold medals in the 50-metre freestyle and medley relay at Victoria in 1994. She also earned medals at World Championships and Pan Pacific Championships, making her one of Australia's most successful sprint swimmers of her generation.
